Hong Kong Retail Trade Falls at Record Pace
The volume of retail sales in Hong Kong tumbled 26.2 percent year-on-year in October 2019, following a downwardly revised 20.3 percent slump in the previous month. It was the largest annual decrease in retail trade since at least October 2005, after almost six months of violent anti-China protests. Sales declined mostly for jewellery, watches & clocks (-46.9 percent vs -44.3 percent in September); clothing & footwear (-34.2 percent vs -22.8 percent); department stores (-31.8 percent vs -25.9 percent); other consumer goods (-28.5 percent vs -19.7 percent) and food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco (-17.5 percent vs -19.5 percent). Year-to-date, retail sales shrank 10 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

Hong Kong Retail Sales Fall Less in September
Retail sales volume in Hong Kong dropped 20.4 percent year-on-year in September 2019, following a downwardly revised 25.2 percent slump in the previous month. It was the eight straight month of drop in retail sales, reflecting severe disruptions in inbound tourism and consumption-related activities caused by months of social unrest. Sales fell at a softer pace for clothing & footwear (-23.2 percent vs -32.2 percent in August); furniture (-5.4 percent vs -5.9 percent); jewellery, watches & clocks (-45.1 percent vs -50.4 percent) and alcoholic drinks & tobacco (-15.4 percent vs -22 percent). On a monthly basis, retail trade grew 1.8 percent, after a 15.4 percent decline in August.

Hong Kong Retail Trade Posts Biggest Fall on Record
Retail sales volume in Hong Kong slipped 25.3 percent year-on-year in August 2019, following an upwardly revised 13.1 percent slump in the previous month. It was the largest decline in retail sales since at least October 2005, mainly reflecting severe disruptions in inbound tourism and consumption-related activities caused by months of social unrest. Sales fell sharply for jewellery, watches & clocks (-50.7% vs -26.4% in July); clothing, footwear & allied products (-32.2% vs -11.3%); at department stores (-30.5% vs -11.2%); other consumer goods (-24.5% vs -11%) and consumer durable goods (-12.6% vs -11.4%). Meanwhile, sales decreased at a softer pace for food, beverages & tobacco (-7.1% vs -9.2%); supermarkets (-5.5% vs -5.6%) and fuels (-1.7% vs -3.8%). On a monthly basis, retail trade shrank 15.3 percent, after an upwardly revised 2.3 percent fall in the previous month. Considering the first eight months of the year, retail trade declined 6.9 percent over a year ago.

Hong Kong Retail Sales Fall the Most in Over 3 Years
Retail sales volume in Hong Kong fell 13 percent year-on-year in July of 2019, following a 7.6 percent decrease in the previous month. It was the biggest decline since February of 2016, as sales declined for food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco (-9.1 percent from -7.9 percent in June); clothing, footwear & allied products (-10.9 percent from -3.8 percent); consumer durable goods (-11.6 percent from -9.9 percent); fuels (-2.9 percent from 0.2 percent); jewellery, watches & clocks (-26.5 percent from -17.1 percent) and for other consumer goods (-10.8 percent from -3.3 percent).

Hong Kong Retail Sales Fall for 5th Straight Month
Retail sales volume in Hong Kong went down 7.6 percent year-on-year in June of 2019, following an upwardly revised 1.8 percent fall in the previous month. It was the fifth straight month of drop in retail sales, as sales continued to decline for food, alcoholic drinks & tobacco (-8.0 percent vs -1.4 percent in May); clothing, footwear & allied products (-4.5 percent vs -3.6 percent); consumer durable goods (-10.1 percent vs -7.6 percent) and jewellery, watches & clocks (-17.1 percent vs -1.9 percent). On the other hand, fuels sales rebounded (0.2 percent vs -8.6 percent) while supermarkets sales dropped at a softer pace (-5.0 percent vs -5.9 percent). On a monthly basis, retail sales went down 12.5 percent, after increasing 6.4 percent in the prior month.

Hong Kong Retail Sales Fall Less in May
Retail sales volume in Hong Kong decreased 1.7 percent year-on-year in May of 2019, following a 5 percent slump in the previous month. It was the fourth straight month of drop in retail sales, though at a softer pace. Sales fell less for food, alcoholic drinks & tobacco (-1.2% vs -2.2% in April), led by fresh fruits & vegetables (2% vs -4.7%); consumer durable goods (-7.6% vs -8.7%) and jewellery, watches & clocks (-1.7% vs -10.5%). In addition, there was a rebound in those at department stores (2.7% vs -2.5%) and for other consumer goods (2.1% vs -3.7%). On the other hand, sales declined further at supermarkets (-5.9% vs -2.5%); fuels (-8.6% vs -1.9%) and clothing, footwear & allied products (-3.1% vs -2.2%). Considering the first five months of 2019, retail trade shrank 2.2 percent compared to the same period a a year ago. On a monthly basis, retail sales grew 6.5 percent, after a 5.7 percent decrease in the prior month.
