Tanzania Annual Inflation Rate Remains Lowest on Record

The annual inflation rate in Tanzania fell to 3.0 percent in November of 2018 from 3.2 percent in the previous month. It remained the lowest inflation rate on record, mainly due to a slowdown in cost of food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Year-on-year, prices eased for food & non-alcoholic beverages (0.4 percent compared to 1.2 percent in October); housing & utilities (13.4 percent compared to 14.1 percent); clothing & footwear (3.3 percent compared to 3.4 percent); and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (1.6 percent compared to 1.9 percent). 

Meanwhile, cost advanced further for transport (5.1 percent compared to 3.0 percent); furnishings & household equipment (2.9 percent compared to 2.8 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (1.7 percent compared to 1.6 percent). Also, inflation was steady for restaurants & hotels (at 1.9 percent, the same as in October) and education (at 2.4 percent). Additionally, prices continued to decline for  communication (-2.7 percent, the same as in October) and recreation & culture (-0.7 percent compared to -1.0 percent). 

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.3 percent, rebounding from a 0.3 percent decrease in the prior month; mainly due to higher cost of non-food items namely kerosene (0.2 percent), charcoal (0.2 percent), firewood (0.5 percent), diesel (9.7 percent) and petrol (1.5 percent).

Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased to 2.6 percent from 2.3 percent in October.
