Tanzania Inflation Rate at 3-Month High in September

The annual inflation rate in Tanzania rose to 3.4 percent year-on-year in September of 2018 from 3.3 percent in the previous month. It was the highest inflation rate since June, mainly due to higher cost of housing and utilities.

Year-on-year, prices increased further for housing & utilities (13.1 percent compared to 12.3 percent in August); clothing & footwear (3.2 percent compared to 2.7 percent); restaurants & hotels (1.9 percent compared to 1.1 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (1.9 percent compared to 1.2 percent) and miscellaneous goods & services (1.3 percent compared to 1.2 percent).

On the other hand, cost eased for food & non-alcoholic beverages (2.0 percent compared to 2.2 percent); transport (2.8 percent compared to 3.4 percent) and furnishings & household equipment (3.0 percent compared to 3.1 percent). Additionally, prices continued to fall for communication (-2.6 percent, the same as in August) and  recreation & culture (-0.2 percent) while inflation was steady for education (2.5 percent, the same as in August).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.1 percent, rebounding from a 0.4 percent fall in the prior month. Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages declined at a softer pace (-0.6 percent compared to -1.9 percent in August) and cost of housing and utilities advanced faster (2.1 percent compared to 1.7 percent).

Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased to 2.2 percent from 2.0 percent in August.
