Tanzania Annual Inflation Rate Steady at 3.3% in August

The annual inflation rate in Tanzania was unchanged at 3.3 percent in August of 2018, the same pace as in the previous month. It remained the lowest inflation rate since series began in 1999, mostly due to a slowdown in food and non-alcoholic beverages prices.

Year-on-year, cost of food & non-alcoholic beverages slowed (2.2 percent compared to 2.8 percent in July) and prices of recreation & culture dropped (-0.2 percent compared to 0.4 percent). Additionally, inflation was steady for housing & utilities (at 12.3 percent, the same as in July); miscellaneous goods & services (at 1.2 percent); education (at 2.5 percent).

Meanwhile, prices advanced faster for transport (3.4 percent compared to 2.5 percent); clothing & footwear (2.7 percent compared to 2.4 percent); furnishings & household equipment (3.1 percent compared to 2.6 percent); restaurants & hotels (1.1 percent compared to 0.8 percent) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (1.2 percent compared to 0.8 percent). Also, prices of communication declined at a softer pace (-2.6 percent compared to -2.7 percent). 

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.4 percent, after a 0.3 percent fall in the prior month. Price of food and non-alcoholic beverages dropped further (-1.9 percent compared to -1.3 percent).

Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased to 2.0 percent from 1.6 percent in July.
