Tanzania Inflation Rate Lowest Since 2003

The annual inflation rate in Tanzania decreased to 3.4 percent in June 2018 from 3.6 percent in May. It was the lowest inflation rate since February 2003, as prices rose less mainly for transport and housing & utilities.

Year-on-year, inflation slowed mainly for transport (1.7 percent vs 1.9 percent in May); housing & utilities (12.0 percent vs 15.0 percent) and clothing & footwear (2.2 percent vs 2.4 percent). Also, prices rose less for restaurants & hotels (0.7 percent vs 1.0 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (0.3 percent vs 1.3 percent) and recreation & culture (0.5 percent vs 0.7 percent) and fell for communication (-2.6 percent vs 0.1 percent). 

In contrast, cost advanced further for food & non-alcoholic beverages (3.4 percent vs 2.6 percent); furnishings (2.4 percent vs 2.3 percent); miscellaneous goods & services (1.4 percent vs 1.2 percent) and education (2.6 percent 2.3 percent).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices went down 0.4 percent, after being flat in May. Main downward pressure came from prices of communication (-2.7 percent); housing & utilities (-1.4 percent); transport (-0.8 percent) and alcoholic beverages & tobacco (-0.8 percent).

Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy, stood at 1.6 percent, the same as in May.
