Tanzania Inflation Rate Falls to Lowest Since 2004

Consumer prices in Tanzania rose 3.8 percent in April of 2018, easing slightly from a 3.9 percent increase in the previous month. The inflation rate remained the lowest since February of 2004 as prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages and clothing and footwear grew at a slower pace.

Year-on-year, prices advanced less for food and non-alcoholic beverages (3.6 percent compared to 4.7 percent in March); clothing and footwear (2.6 percent compared to 3.2 percent); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (1.6 percent compared to 2.0 percent) and miscellaneous goods and services (0.9 percent compared to 1.2 percent). In contrast, cost went up at a faster pace for transport (1.8 percent compared to 1.4 percent); housing and utilities (13.1 percent compared to 10.4 percent); furnishing and household equipment (2.0 percent compared to 1.9 percent) and recreation and culture (1.2 percent compared to 1.1 percent). Additionally, cost of communication rebounded (0.1 percent compared to -0.2 percent). Also, inflation was steady for restaurants and hotels (0.8 percent, the same as in March); health (1.6 percent) and education (2.4 percent).

On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.4 percent, after a 1.2 percent rise in March. Prices of food eased to 0.3 percent from 2.1 percent. 

Annual core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose 1.4 percent, down from a 1.6 percent gain in the prior month.
